He gets in trouble in home and is forced out into the world, where he does good and very well, thank you.A Girl of the Commune, on the other hand, begins with a boy who is, in a word, lazy. And the action/adventure features, while present, are subsummed under the romance and character development bits. Oh, and the book is a mystery. Not so much for the reader, but for the characters.
Altogether a good, if different, Henty.

G. A. Henty is know for writing historical fiction primarily for young men. This book is unusual in that the main characters are evenly divided between the sexes Cuthbert Harrington (an Englishman) and his love interest Mary Brander (an independent feminist), then Arnold Dampierre (an American) and his French love interest Minnette Dufaure, (the title character). These four end up in Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The title refers to the Commune of Paris which briefly governed the city (not the Communists of Russia). Although there are elements of a romance here, there is also some detail regarding the various forces involved in the war. To understand the details, it would help to become familiar with the basic geography of Paris (neighborhoods and landmarks) as well as the transition from the Second French Empire, to the Third Republic, and the rise and fall of the Paris Commune.

GA Henty does a great job developing his characters and tying many historical events into his stories. I end up having to pull myself away so I can get other things done.
All of G.A.Henty's books are great historical novels based on historical facts. He definitely did his homework as far as researching the era this was set in.
A very readable account of the Franco-Prussian War (1870s) and the radical leftist take-over of Paris that resulted. Henty's characters bring it wonderfully to life--as is usual with this excellent writer. For ages twelve to adult.
